If you’ve ever purchased a home you know that the purchase is just the beginning. Rarely do you close the deal knowing that everything is in working order. In fact if you close the deal and everything is exactly the way you want it, then that’s one for the record books because for better or worse, it rarely works that way. There are things to change, tear down and/or modify and at the top of the list or close to it are the windows in your home.

With windows you’re challenged with going all new or with quality window replacement. Each has its advantages. It really depends on what you’re looking to do and how much you want to spend.

New Versus Replaced

So what exactly are “new” windows? And what are replacement windows? Come to think of it, aren’t you replacing your old windows with new windows? Well kinda sorta. Window replacement is just a term. What you replace your windows with and how you go about it is why we’re here today.

In layman’s terms, a replacement window fits inside of your home’s current window frame, leaving the original exterior & interior window frame and trim in its original location. This is a quicker and less expensive method of replacing windows.

The downside is that window replacement of this method does nothing for any structural problems that may exist. For example, rotted wood or air leakage/poor ventilation. A replacement window will not solve these issues.

New construction windows, on the other hand, replace everything. You are, in effect, plugging the hole left by the old window and frame. Removal of the siding around the window, or new wide trim installation may be involved, as may touch-up painting of the interior drywall. As you can see installing new windows is much more involved which is why replacement windows can be accomplished in a way that is just as efficient and more economical. When installing replacement windows, remember that the existing window frame remains and the replacement window is installed inside the existing frame.
